Project

Gunda Wieczorek is working in the RAGO (tiefe RAndströme im östlichen Gotlandbecken der Ostsee) project led by Dr. Eberhard Hagen. The project is investigating the deep boundary currents in the Eastern Gotlandbasin of the Baltic Sea. This project is located at the IOW in the section "Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation".

Current work

Since November 2005 I'm a PhD-student at the IOW (Baltic Sea Research Institute). In the framework of the project RAGO, I will investigate the spatiotemporal scales of topographically steered boundary currents and their effects in and below the halocline during inflow events into the eastern Gotlandbasin and stagnation periods in this basins.

Professional experience/ education

June 2004 - October 2005:  Research Scientist in the CLIVAR marin-2 project at the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg

January 2004:  Diplom (=MSc) in Physical Oceanography. Thesis title: "Seasonal Cycle of Near Surface Temperature and Salinity in Temporarily Ice Covered Regions"

1997 - 2004:  Studies of Physical Oceanography with Physics, Geophysics and Hydrobiology as minor subjects at the University of Hamburg, Germany

Former projects

CLIVAR/marin-2, B1-3: Vorhersagbarkeit der Schwankungen von Merdionaltransporten im Nordatlantik: Beteiligte Prozesse und deren Relevanz auf entsprechenden Raum- und Zeitskalen (BMBF-Project, 2002-2005). Field programmes comprise observations and analysis of low-frequency interactions of the subpolar gyre and the North Atlantic Current and their implications for the thermohaline circulation, in particular for the meridional transport of heat. (Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), Hamburg, 2004-2005)

SFB512-subproject C4: The east Greenland current, an indicator of the low frequency variability of the outflow of the system Arctic Ocean/Nordic Seas (2001-2003): Master's Thesis on "Seasonal Cycle of Near Surface Temperature and Salinity in Temporarily Ice Covered Regions" (University of Hamburg, 2002-2003).
