Increasing activities at sea are leading to more complex interactions between society, economy and ecology. This challenge can be met by science-based planning, management and protection of marine areas. Current fields of action are for example the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), regional conventions (HELCOM), including environmental impact assessments in planning procedures and especially the implementation of coherent pan-Baltic marine spatial planning (MSP).

The Marine Planning working group builds the interface between IOW research in natural sciences, social science and legal disciplines and decision-makers in authorities. We work interdisciplinary in close collaboration with other working groups of the IOW, especially those engaged in Research Focus 4.
