Research interests

My research interests are in a broad sense atmosphere-ocean interactions and their representation in climate models. In the past I have worked with a hierarchy of climate models to study the role of the atmosphere for the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as well as ENSO nonlinearity and teleconnections. Further, I have studied the origin of the warm sea surface temperature biases in the tropical Atlantic in coupled and atmospheric general circulation models. Now at IOW, I am working together with my colleagues on the development of the Regional Climate System Model IOW-RCSM. Further, I am studying the influence of the large scale atmospheric circulation on the Baltic Sea. With my expertise in tropical Atlantic atmosphere-ocean interactions I also contribute to the project BANINO, where we study the interannual variability of the wind-driven upwelling in the Benguela region off Namibia.
