Research background

As an early career scientist I have had the good fortune to work and gain experience in a variety of coastal marine ecological topics. As a student I investigated the effects of river discharge on the composition of coral skeletons. For my diploma I studied trophic interactions between primary producers and consumers in seagrass beds. During my PhD studies I focused on estuarine nutrient dynamics, including influences of wetlands, tides and human alterations.

In line with my wide and developing research interest I am now working on water column particle dynamics in different open ocean systems (the Black Sea and the subtropical North-East Atlantic).

Through these studies I have developed expertise in e.g.:

  • nutrient cycling
  • land-ocean-connectivity
  • coastal wetland dynamics
  • sediment-water-exchange
  • anthropogenic effects
  • stable isotope studies
  • experimental design
  • long experience in land-based, coastal and offshore field work under difficult conditions
