Norbert Wasmund - CV

Dr. rer. nat. Norbert Wasmund was born in 1954. He studied marine biology at the University of Rostock and defended his doctoral thesis on primary production and ecology of microphytobenthos in 1983 and continued research on phytoplankton in coastal waters of the Baltic Sea.

He was involved in the algae identification book “Ostsee-Algenflora” (Fischer Verlag Jena 1990). In 1992, he moved to the Baltic Sea Research Institute Warnemünde (IOW), where he is responsible for the biological monitoring, with special interest in phytoplankton bloom dynamics and long-term trends in relation to abiotic parameters, also primary production and nitrogen fixation.

He was chairman of the ICES/HELCOM Phytoplankton Expert Group and is involved in different other groups like IOC/ICES Working Group on Harmful Algal Bloom Dynamics. He has published more than 90 scientific articles and was co-editor of the book “State and Evolution of the Baltic Sea, 1952 – 2005.
