COCOA will investigate physical, biogeochemical and biological processes along the coastal zone in the water column and in sediments in a combined and coordinated fashion to improve our understanding of the interaction of these processes on the removal of nutrients along the land-sea interface. Our goal is to achieve true inter-disciplinarity through close collaborations, building our hypotheses together and incorporating the new knowledge generated into state-of-the-art ecosystem models. This coordinated action will allow us to synthesise the results on the entire ecosystem scale of the Baltic and to improve current decision support tools used for the implementation of the HELCOM BSAP, EU WFD and MSFD.
