GENUS (Geochemistry and Ecology of the Namibian Upwelling System)  untersucht am Beispiel eines großen Küstenauftriebssystems (dem nördlichen Benguela-Auftriebsgebiet) die Beziehungen zwischen Klimawandel, biogeochemischen Zyklen von Nährstoffen und klimarelavanten Gasen und Ökosystemstrukturen. Änderungen im physikalischen Antrieb der Zirkulation wirken in diesem Ökosystem direkt auf Stoffflussmengen und –muster sowie auf Ökosystemstrukturen und -leistung.

Das Vorhaben versteht sich als deutscher Beitrag zur internationalen IMBER-Initiative (Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research) des IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme), welche die Auswirkungen des Globalen Wandels auf biogeochemische Zyklen und Ökosysteme im Meer untersucht.

Teilprojekt 2 untersucht Teilprozesse auf verschiedenen Ebenen des Nahrungsnetzes im Benguela Auftriebsgebiet. Das umfasst  den Beitrag mesoskaler Prozesse und langer Schwerewellen auf laterale Stofftransporte zwischen dem Namibischen Schelf und dem angrenzenden Ozean sowie die Planktonsukzession und Entwicklung spezifischer Organismen ( Coccolithophoriden) in Auftriebsfilamenten.
