Focus 4: Coastal seas and society

Logo Research Focus 4

The Baltic Sea, located in the heart of Europe, is under massive pressure. There is hardly another sea that is more exposed to human activities—as a maritime thoroughfare, dumping ground and source of raw materials.

In Research Focus 4 (RF 4), IOW scientists consider the interactions between the Baltic Sea ecosystem and human activities. How are people already influencing the Baltic Sea? Which trends in the sea's massive use have implications for its future? What are their consequences for the overall ecosystem? And are there alternatives that offer a more sustainable use of its resources?

In addition to intensive research on the interactions between the Baltic and humans, RF 4 seeks to ensure that the IOW's findings go beyond the limits of the scientific world to benefit all, by gaining the attention of environmental policy makers who will then devise the necessary legislative measures and promote their implementation at national and international levels.
