In the frame of this project we aim to study two different topics: 1.The effects of low oxygen or anoxic conditions in the water column on the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. A special emphasis will be given to the carbon cycle, namely the transformation or degradation of organic material, as well as on the impact of water column anoxia on the surrounding habitat in terms of biodiversity and food chains. 2. The postglacial development of the Patagonian Fjord Region in response to changes in the dynamics of the SE Pacific atmospheric and the surface current circulation patterns, and the role of the postglacial eustatic sea level rise, the isostatic rebound, and the inland glacier activity on the fjord environment. To achieve these goals we propose three different working areas along the Chilean coast: the upwelling area off Concepción, the Patagonian fjord system Canal Concepción/Canal Wide/Seno Eyre, and the stratified Patagonian fjord Golfo Almirante Montt, which only recently has been reported to be anoxic.
