Das Vorhaben strebt die Verringerung der Müllabundanz durch die Entwicklung und Implementierung eines nachhaltigen Abfallwirtschaftssystems für die Tourismusregionen in den Ländern Nordafrikas (Marokko, Tunesien, Ägypten und Algerien) an. Anfallende Stoffströme sollen nach den „Reduce, Reuse, Recycle“ Ansatz sinnvoll verwertet werden. Ziel ist die Reduzierung der Plastikemissionen entlang der Küsten. Aufgabe des IOW ist die Etablierung und Durchführung eines Meeresmüll-Monitorings, die großräumige Erfassung des Verschmutzungszustandes, die Analyse der Plastik-Quellen und Eintragspfade, sowie die Bewertung und Verbesserung der Effizienz von Vermeidungsmaßnahmen.
