The purpose of the oceanography library is to meet the literary needs of staff members and students of IOW. However, the library is also open for study to interested members of the public. Books may be checked out; however, journals and periodicals can only be used at IOW. Copying facilities are available at the library.

The interlibrary loan service supports the research needs of IOW staff by obtaining materials which are not available at the IOW library.
