UBA-Eutro: The Baltic Sea Action Plan - Modelling of Water Quality Indicators

Model simulations with the spatio-temporal highly resolved 3D ecosystem model ERGOM-MOM are utilized to evaluate existing nutrient reduction targets for the western Baltic Sea (BSAP/MSFD); assess if further reductions are necessary; analyse if existing reduction targets waters allow additional aquaculture and if yes, where and to what extent; analyse the influence of the Oder river plume on the eutrophication assessments of the Bornholm basin and assess the spatial extent, duration and variability of hypoxic areas within the western Baltic Sea. Based on the results, an approach to integrate model simulations and field data into a new spatio-temporal resolved monitoring and reporting system for the indicators nutrients, chlorophyll-a and oxygen depletion is developed.
