The moderate MBIs in December 1982 and January 1983 supplied the deep water of the Bornholm and Gdańsk Basins with oxygen. In March/April, the inflow of water containing oxygen was observed in the eastern Gotland Basin lifting up the stagnant bottom water in the Gotland Deep and forming an intermediate layer with H2S. Anoxic conditions remained in the deep water of all other central basins during 1983 (NEHRING & FRANCKE, 1985a).
