In January 1993, a very strong MBI occurred (see Table 1) which was of great importance for the oxygen conditions in the whole central Baltic deep water. The event caused an increase in oxygen concentrations in the deep water of the Bornholm and Gdańsk Basins. Favoured by pulsations of the inflow through the Słupsk Furrow short-term fluctuations between oxic and anoxic conditions occurred during the deep water renewal in the eastern Gotland Basin (NEHRING et al., 1994a, 1994b).
