IT & Data Management

As one of the central units, the IT & Data Management department has to provide numerous support services for the IOW.

Organizing and ensuring a stable and reliable IT infrastructure is a major area of responsibility. In addition, other tasks are performed such as the central data management in the IOW or the data processing for the BSH within the framework of the Baltic Sea Monitoring Program.

The group manages and optimizes the technical infrastructure that is needed for an effective scientific work. This applies particularly to the server environment (such as storage and backup), the network including the external links on the X-WIN, central services such as e-mail (including virus and spam protection), FTP, WWW, fax, etc. as well as the public computer room and the public printer infrastructure. IOW employees are assisted in issues or questions regarding hard- or software procurement.

Main tasks are among others:

  • Construction and operation of the local institute network and connectivity to other networks
  • Construction and operation of central server and other key IT resources (eg e-mail, file servers, Windows domain, etc)
  • Backup and archive services
  • Management of the archive of measurement data
  • Management of IOW databases and other information sources
  • Data processing within the framework of the Baltic Sea Monitoring Program
