Bachelor-/Masterthesis Project:  Aquatic microorganisms in the atmosphere

In the department "Biological Oceanography", working group “Microbial Ecology” (Leibniz-Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde) we are looking for a Bachelor or Master student (Biology/ Environmental Sciences) in 2017 to investigate aquatic microorganisms in the atmosphere.

In the framework of the multi-disciplinary project MarParCloud (Marine biogenic production, organic aerosols and maritime clouds: a process chain), which is funded by the Leibniz society, we aim a better understanding of how organic material is transported form the ocean into aerosols. The organic composition of aerosols is thought to influence ice nucleation and cloud formation and, thus, has strong implications for climate-relevant processes.  In our work package we want to study the diversity and activity of microorganisms in water and air samples by 16S rRNA sequencing approaches and substrate uptake assays, respectively. Microorganisms inhabiting the air-sea interface are thereby of special interest, considering the distinctive habitat features (Cunliffe et al., 2013, doi: 10.1016/j.pocean.2012.08.004). Additionally, establishing a methodological setup to measure microbial activity in aerosol samples is envisioned.

Interested students should enjoy working in a team and should be willing to work both in the laboratory and in the field. Experiences in molecular biology, microbiology or microbial ecology are welcome.
