Due to the very strong winter 1978/79 covering huge areas of the Baltic Proper with ice, only data of two monitoring cruises could be collected in 1979. In continuation of the stagnation period, H2S was observed in the bottom water of the Gdańsk Basin in August and Oct./Nov. as well as in all central basins in August and Oct./Nov, except in the Landsort Deep station. H2S had developed in the bottom water of the Bornholm Basin in November 1979 (NEHRING & FRANCKE, 1981).
